Shrew mice (Soricidae) are the smallest mammals. Though they appear so they are neither mice nor rodents but belong to the so called insect eaters and is related to moles and hedgehogs. Worldwide more than 350 different species are known, about ten oflive in Middle Europe and six of them in Germany: Eurasian shrew, bicoloured shrew, common white-toothed shrew, water shrew, Miller's water shrew, and pygmy shrew.
Common for all of them is that they are small and almost blind but nevertheless can be called a success in evolution. Shrew mice belong to the small group of mammals which use echolocation for finding around. It is not known yet if they use this for finding their prey as well.

More interesting details:

  • The heart beats about 800 - 1000 per minute.
  • In case of danger mother and offsprings move as a long caravan. The offspring bite into the tail of the mouse ahead and the first one in its mothers tail. Hence none gets lost and the caravan might appear as a snake too.
  • Shrew mice belong to the species protection.

Our little plush shrew mouse will surely get a particuliar protection in future - and will greatly appreciate it by giving fun and joy. It might send high frequency tones, but furthermore it might develop its own communication with its new owner and playmate.
