Lion, white

Product 12 of 62

The lion (panthera leo) is closely related to the tiger, but different environmental influences resulted in a different evolution. That is why the lion is a little smaller and chunkier. This makes it less agile, but not the slightest bit less strong. Opposite to the tiger the lion loves open spaces, just like the African savannah, which it typically inhabits. At the same time it is very social, lions live in prides, and hunt in groups – a unique features among cats. However, it is the lionesses that go hunting. The male lions are fully occupied with defending the pride area against mostly conspecific intruders.

With their thick mane they give an impressive sight, particularly for their predators. It makes them look bigger, espacially thick and dark manes testify to the strength of its bearer. Is that not yet intimidating enough, it lets the roar sound, which can be heard from a long distance. Because of this majestic roar the lion is often called the "King of Animals". Still, it is not immune against changes to the habitat: Together with the conflicts with men this causes a decline in population and the lion belongs to the endangered group of animals.

Usually the fur of lions does have a yellow-golden or sandy colour. But sometimes white fur happens due to a colour mutation. There are reports about melanism, too, means about black lions. But this could not be prooved yet.

Our white lion is standing mighty and with pride. Where might it look at? It is smiling and seems to be satisfied. Take a step into the dessert and find out.
