Rudolph Wurlitzer, geb. 1829 in Schilbach, Sachsen, stammte aus einer Familie, die bereits seit dem 17. Jh. Musikinstrumenten herstellte. Er wanderte 1853 in die USA aus und gründete 1856 die "Rudolph Wurlitzer Company" in Cincinnati, Ohio. Nachdem er zunächst nur Musikinstrumente aus Deutschland importierte, baute er ab 1880 eigene Klaviere. Die Zusammenarbeit ab 1887 mit DeKleist, einem erfolgreichen Hersteller für u.a. Straßenorgeln brachte Wurlitzer's erstes münzbetriebenes Klavier "Tonophone" hervor. Dieses wurde ein großer Erfolg. 1908 übernahm Wurlitzer die Firma DeKleist samt Gebäude - und ist seitdem in North Tonawanda als Produktionsstätte angesiedelt.
Farny Wurlitzer, Sohn und Nachfolger von Rudolph, kaufte 1933 die Patente für den "Simplex-Mechanismus" von Homer E. Capehart und stellte im gleichen Jahr den Prototyp "Debutante" vor. Die Firma war zu der Zeit bereits in North Tonawanda, New York, ansässig.
Nach dem typischen hölzernen Design der 1930er bekamen die Musikboxen gegen Ende der 30er zunehmend bunte Plastiken, rotierende Zylinder und schließlich die "Bubble-Tubes". Das Design all dieser Modelle entstammte bis zum Modell 1100 der Feder von Paul Fuller (1897-1951). Höhepunkt der sog. "Goldenen Ära" war das Modell 1015, welches ca. 56.000 Mal verkauft wurde. Der Werbekampagne dieser Zeit ist es sicher zu verdanken, dass der Name "Wurlitzer" bis heute als Synonym für Musikbox oder Jukebox verwendet wird. 
1960 wurde in Deutschland die "Deutsche Wurlitzer" im westfälischen Hüllhorst als Tochtergesellschaft gegründet (1960 - 2/2016).
1973 feierte man das 50-jährige Firmenjubiläum mit dem Modell "1050". Diese Modellbezeichnung führt zur Victor Victrola 10-50 zurück: Howard Eugene Wurlitzer, Bruder von Farny, kaufte von 1923-27 Victrola Modelle, unter anderem die Victrola 10-50, um in das Musikboxgeschäft einzusteigen und der Wirtschaftskrise etwas entgegen zu setzen. Leider verstarb er 1928.
Bis 1974 baute die US Wurlitzer Musikboxen in North Tonawanda, bis sie dort ihre Tore schloss.

Rudolph Wurlitzer, born in 1829 in Schilbach, Saxony, belonged to a family producing musical instruments since the 17th century. In 1853 Rudolph Wurlitzer emigrated to the USA and founded the "Rudolph Wurlitzer Company" in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1856. After importing musical instruments from Germany, in 1880 he started to produce his own pianos. In 1896 the first electrical coin-operated piano was introduced. In 1887 the cooperation with DeKleist, a famous barrel organ producer in North Tonwanda began and Wurlitzer's first coin operated piano "Tonophone" became a great success. In 1908 Wurlitzer bought out DeKleist and the plant in North Tonawanda became their production facility.
In 1933 Farny Wurlitzer, son and successor of Rudolph, bought the patents for the so called "Simplex-Mechanism" of Homer E. Capehart and introduced the same year the prototype "Debutante". The company was located in North Tonawanda, New York, already at this time.
After the typical wooden design of the 30s the coin operated phonographs got more and more coloured plastics, rotating cylinders and bubble tubes by the late 30s. The design if all those models up to Wurlizer 1100 was created by Paul Fuller (1897-1951). The high peek of this so called "Golden Era" was model 1015 which production number is about 56,000. The great commercial compaign of that time made the name "Wurlitzer" as a synonym for jukeboxes in general until today.
In 1960 the affiliate "Deutsche Wurlitzer" was founded  in Hüllhorst, Germany(1960 - 2/2016).
In 1973, the US company celebrated its 50th anniversary with models "1050". This model name leads back to the Victor Victrola 10-50: Howard Eugene Wurlitzer, brother of Farny, bought Victrola models from 1923-27, among others the Victrola 10-50, to enter the jukebox business and to counteract the economic depression. Unfortunately, he died in 1928.
Until 1974 jukeboxes had been produced by the US Wurlitzer company in North Tonawanda before they closed down.
Wurlitzer jukeboxes were also produced under license by Notomat (Leghorn, Italy - contract in 1959), Casa Riojas and Sonata (Mexico), CA Victor Co. Ltd. (Kanada), Siegel (Canada, Wurlitzer Autom. Phonograph Co. (Australia) and also assembled in Germany by Husemann (contract for importing and distributing in ~1953). Swiss importer: Piano Eckenstein, Basel
